Bonny Black was a black mare owned by the Duke of Rutland, with two white socks on her hind feet and several small white spots on her left flank. She started racing as a three year old, beating older horses at equal weights. Throughout her career, Bonny Black appears to have been beaten only once, by Old Scarborough Mare. She was considered one of the best racehorses of her era, and no horse could be found to challenge her for 1000 guineas. Bonny Black won several high quality races at multiple tracks before being retired to stud. She produced one foal, Cyprus Arabian Mare. Cyprus Arabian Mare was unraced, but produced two foals, Chicken and Young True Blue Mare, from whom Family 39 descends. Family 39 produced Grand Criterium and Poule d’Essai des Poulains winners Val d’Or and Vinicius, Japanese Derby winner Daishin Volgard, and Queen’s Plate winners Gustavus and Tortoise among many others. Bonny Black was noted as the ancestor of “a number of fine horses” in her time.
